As early as in the Spring & Autumn Period ,Yantai was a very important port on the shipping lines between the Southeast Asia including Malaysia Peninsula and the coastal provinces of Northeast China. It was also one of the earliest trading ports of China opened to the outside world in modern time.
There are 9 large/medium ports including four first-class ones opening to outside world and 31 berths, each with a handling capacity of over 10,000 tons. Total exchange capacity of the ports reaches 27.71 million tons every year.
Situated at Shandong Peninsula and in Zhifu Bay, Yantai Port is a key port of the state water transportation, an opening port along the coastline and an important hub of the great south-north highway between Sanya and Tongjiang, which is now under building by our country. The are of Yantai Port is 4.03 square kilometers and the coastline of Yantai port is 7,263 meters. It has 38 berths including 33 productive berths, among which 19 berths in deepwater own a handling capacity of over 10,000 tons respectively. The designed annual exchange capacity is 14.01 million tons and in 2002, the actual exchange volume is 22.89 million tons including container exchange volume of 160,000 TEU. The third phase of the construction of seven deepwater berths with expected annual handling capacity of 3,900,000 tons has started in August 1997. Two berths of 100,000 tons used for bulk cargo and two berths of 50,000 tons engaged in container freights were listed in the first phase of this construction and has been put into operation in 2002. Passenger liners go to Tianjin and Dalian directly, and the liner named “Zi Yu Lan?comes and goes between Yantai and Pusan, Kunsan of Korea. Cargo ships offer freight services to more than 100 ports in scores of over 70 countries and regions thoughout the world. Container freighters sail regularly between Yantai and Japan, the United States, Canada, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Every year there are over 800 foreign ships enter Yantai Port for the first time. There will be 58 berths, including 43 deepwater berths, and the annual exchange capacity is expected to be more than 45 million tons in 2020.
Railway
Railway between Yantai and Lancun joins up with the country’s main line and contacts Yantai and many other cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Jinan, Qingdao, etc. Yantai is also a key point on the Nation-designed Railway line from Harbin, Hei Longjiang Province to Huangpu Port of Shanghai along the eastern coastline. This line crosses the Bohai Bay via Dalian to Yantai by ferryboat and then connects to Lan-Yan line.
Highway
A complete highway network extends to every town in Yantai Region. The highway length is 6161 km in the area, and highway density has reached 44.8km/sq. km by the end of year 2002.100% of all the towns are connected by the blacktop driveway in the Area. At present, the highway network of Yantai, which can be kept using in both sunny days and rainy day, mainly consists of the center point of downtown, and the framework of Yan-Wei Road, Yan-Qing Road, Raocheng Road, No.206 National Highway and Tong-San Expressway, etc.
Airport
The air transportation has achieved a great development. The under-construction Laishan Airport of 4D Standard has been officially certified as an international airport opening to the outside world by State Council.Over 20 regular airlines with over 140 flights per week have linked most of the domestic big and
medium cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Harbin, Shenzhen, Dalian, Xian, Xiamen, Wuhan, Tianjin, Wenzhou, Chengdu, etc. Meanwhile, liners to Hong Kong, Seoul, Inchon and Daegu of Korea have also been opened, among which there are 2 passenger liners between Yantai and Daegu and 14 ones between Yantai and Inchon.
Telecommunication Service
Yantai has excellent postal service and advanced telecommunication networks. By 2002, the telephone-installed capacity of the whole city has come up to over 2.27 million; the city has built up a digital C3 local telephone exchange net with reasonable structure. With world level technology, the optical fiber transmission net covers all the city and links
to the state and world; The high speed transmission net has been built up with the speed of 320 G, which ranks in the first class among China; the speed of internet outlet is 7.5G, which has created the net conditions to assure ?000M to neibourhood, 100M to apartment building, 10M to the desk? to meet the different requirements of the customers. By March 2003, the customers of telephone has reached to 1.71 million, ranks No.2 in Shandong Province; the customers of wireless city telephone reached 130, 000 sets, ranks No.2 in the Province; The internet customers reached 270,000, ranks No.3 in Shandong. All kinds of Internet engineering develop rapidly, like Government on Internet, Enterprise on Internet, School on Internet, Family on Internet as well as E-Commerce flourishing. Many companies and government departments set up their own information appliance system. Net business like paying tax, enrolling students, banking, stocking, ticket booking, biding has been accomplished widely. The communication of the city has realized new structure with digitized transmission, various patterns, safety net and advanced service.
