Education
Yantai is one of the regional cities where the educational popularization degree is very high. The University entrance rate ranks the first in Shandong Province. There are 7 senior universities and colleges such as Yantai University,Yantai Normal Institute with 87.3 thousand students and 66 middle level special training schools with 69.1 thousand students.
Science and Technology
The science-technology is advanced and strong in Yantai which is one of “National Technology Innovation model Cities?and “National Science and Education advanced Cities? Nine counties and districts have entered into “National Top 100 Counties in terms of Science & Technology Power? There are 30 science and research institutions, 1150 private-owned science-
technology enterprises. There are 4 technology centers at national-level and 15 at provincial-level. 301 hi-tech enterprises were approved by the government of Shandong Province. There are 350,000 professionals and technicians in Yantai. In 2002, 224 items of science-technology achievements were achieved, which include 1 item of national science-technology progress award and 48 items of provincial science-technology progress award. 943 items of patent were applied, 702 of which were authorized. In 2002, the output value of Hi-tech industry reaches US $2.7 billion.


Culture
Yantai is called “Beijing Opera Town?with a good culture and art atmosphere.In Yantai there are 12 artistic performance units, 8 artistic performance places, 12 public libraries, 15 mass artistic cultural center, 191 cultural club, 1 artistic education organization, 8 palace museums, 6 cultural relic management organization, 1 antique shop, 14 movie projection companies.
Radio and TV
The public media industry is well developed in Yantai, the population covering rate for the radio broadcasting is 96.3%, for TV is 95.1%.
Healthcare
In Yantai there are 1490 public health organizations, 28400 public health workers. There are 17,000 beds in 103 hospitals.
Sports
Five Yantai athletes were in the Chinese Olympic teams of the 27th Olympic Games and one of them won a gold medal.
